Amy Halloran's reviews and letters from the road inspired these writers to
respond this week. As always, we welcome your ideas, letters, and
responses.

I just found your site, and I am new to computers. Perhaps I am at
the
wrong address; I don't know. I read Amy's dismissive review of The
Stone
Diaries. I will not defend the book. As a whole, it is a classic
example
of "bestseller list" bullshit. Manipulative, yes. But halfway into
the
novel, the dead husband's letter to his wife..."I would like to have
danced
with you through the back door..." A decent book (and that is a
realistic
analysis, I think) can be redeemed by a moment of beauty. The novel
probably didn't deserve the acclaim it won, but the acclaim gave
people a
chance to see an absolutely gorgeous paragraph on life left unlived.
How
often is it done so quietly? Check out A Sensible Life by Mary
Wesley, if
only for the tango on the beach.

Hey Hot Ink,
You've got some nerve letting the former "Girl Jesus" write for
you. I liked Amy Halloran better when she was in the Stranger. Now she
sounds like she's yet another 20-something who's gotten boring and grown
up. What kind of young adventurer is she, if she's thinking of settling
down, and reads stodgy old farts like Adrian Mold and "Angela's Ashes"
(that is SO last year).
Why not get into some real interesting literature, like Kathy Acker? I
want to read some experimental writing in hot ink. Push some boundaries,
and get really hot with your ink. Thanks for the "rant" space. See ya
soon.
