ot Ink is a Dynamic HTML Channel.
Dynamic HTML invigorates and revitalizes the Web. Documents that used to
be relatively lifeless -- with the exception of a few animated GIFs -- can
now come alive. Objects can move and morph, and shoot at each other, and
even react to a user's actions. It's more fun than watching television!
How did this happen? The Microsoft team that was developing the
next-generation HTML editor determined that it would be possible to turn
the editor into a browser -- to build both from the same code base. This
development also incorporated the cool idea of using snippets of scripting
code to perform editor-like functions.
|
This means documents no longer just sit
there. Anything the editor could do, the browser could do as well: add and
remove parts of an HTML page, change the font of some text, replace an
image -- anything. Instead of the difficult javascript "layering" of
Netscape 4.0, Internet Explorer 4.0 makes possible truly Dynamic HTML.
People can tell the browser what to do.
Interestingly, although people creating Web
pages generally determine the order in which words and images appear on a
Web page, they don't actually tell the browser where on the page to put
the different words and images. The individual browser actually positions
the elements on the page depending on the size of the browser window and
some other factors. In other words, unlike in magazines, the author
doesn't have complete control over the way the Web pages eventually are
displayed.
c oming next week: a Letter from P.I. Reporter
John Marshall, an Encounter with Neil
Gaiman, more information about Drinking Dynamic
Hot Ink, a report on Las Vegas' Literary Disaster
and a Preview of Steelhead's New Issue.
All this and more, printed FRESH for you, starting Monday!
